SOMESAY 2021 | Syrah
Syrah | Shiraz
It seems there is some confusion as to whether it is Shiraz or Syrah. It is in fact the same grape varietal, a different style. Some say Shiraz, some say Syrah, we don’t really mind what you call it, as long as you enjoy it as much as we do.
Somesay offers an amalgamation of red fruit dusted with delicate nuances of pink peppercorns, sandalwood and white tea. On the palate, well-judged oak adds spice, while the fruit intensity of black cherry and mulberry takes the lead. Aromas of tomato leaf and oregano bring a savoury depth, while the classic expression of balance lies in its polished tannin and mouth-coating salinity.
Most of the fruit is sourced from Stellenbosch and Cederberg vineyards, while a small percentage comes from Ceres, Swartland and Piekenierskloof. This is a proudly South African red blend made from 100% Syrah.

Somesay 2021 is a classic example of a lighter style red grounded with a harmonious balance of freshness and tannin.
The discerning use of oak adds spice, while the complexity of fruit aromas and flavour still takes the lead to create depth and character. The wine shows good complexity, albeit not overly intense and revels in a sophisticated style that is both modish and moreish.
Now in its 3rd year, Somesay has shown a consistent vibrancy, making its name even more of a brain twister. The wine shows the magnanimity associated with Shiraz yet possesses that ethereal quality that makes Syrah an enigma as it crosses world wine borders.
APPEARANCE
The wine has a medium intensity, yielding vivid ruby hues that become lighter as it reaches the rim of the glass.
NOSE
It is governed by an expressive amalgamation of red fruit such as currents, cranberry, and red plum. Yet, the delicate nuances of grounded pink peppercorns and sandalwood exude a magic scent that allures you.
A floral note of potpourri and white tea adds elegance, shaping a dainty personality that galvanises the wine as an unadulterated version of the varietal made with little interference. Primary driven in its youth with subtle oak spice and fruit-butter adding a secondary richness, the wine is still in its infancy.
PALATE
The wine is dry with a medium-plus, mouth-coating acidity. The medium tannin polishes the wine beautifully, leaving a fine-grained chalky texture. The alcohol contributes to this medium-bodied, dependent on the subtle play of the tannin and acidity to give it structure and definition.
As far as flavour intensity goes, the palate exudes black cherry with red fruit playing second fiddle to flavours of tomato leaf, oregano, and the cool herbaceous note of white teas seasoning the wine. A medium-plus finish with a salivating salinity completes the wine.
