Uncork SA Rating

Last night I had the absolute privilege of tasting two very special wines, produced under a label that I'm pretty sure you are going to want to check out.

Produced in very limited quantities & likely to be sought after. Harry Hartman Wine Company, birthed through a friendship and a mutual love for sharing great wines & knowledge, has released 2 wines in their maiden vintage - 2500 bottles of each.

Somesay 2019  -
100% Syrah

The first portion of the fruit is sourced from mountainous sites, 900m above sea level. The soils are a combination of sandstone and ferricrete laterite. The rest of the fruit is sourced from the Polkadraai Hills, Devon Valley, and Bottelary Hill wards in Stellenbosch dominated by decomposed granite.

Deep Ruby with a purple rim. Blackberry & cherry led nose followed by pepper then meaty notes. Punchy ripe plum on the palate joined by peppery spice. A fine powdery tannin with an elegant finish.

Coracle 2019Cabernet Sauvignon 37%, Petit Verdot 31%, Cabernet Franc 17%, Merlot 15%

The vineyards are spread throughout Stellenbosch. The Cabernet Franc vineyard is situated on an east-facing slope decomposed granite slope at an altitude of 250m in the Bottelary ward of Stellenbosch. The Merlot vineyard is situated in the Simonsberg ward and also situated on an east-facing slope decomposed granite slope at 300m. The Petit Verdot vineyard is at 275m above sea level in the Bottelary ward but on much deeper and heavier soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard is planted on various sites within the Bottelary, Helderberg and Polkadraai wards on decomposed granite and ferricrete soils.

Deep purple colour preceded a nose of cassis, dark fruits and pencil shavings with hints of cedar. I also picked up a distance note of violets. Full body with a grippy tannin. This wine is set to age well I would think - and I'd be interested in following it up in 5 years+

I tried to figure out which of these wines stands ahead of the other, but to be fair, they are both pretty amazing - and so my recommendation would probably be to buy both - hang on to the Coracle for a little while (if you can).
